Frequently asked questions

If your question is not here, raise it on the suggestion board — that is the fastest way to reach us, and the answer ends up helping the next person too.

The basics

What counts as an AI fan film here?

A film that is set in, or clearly draws on, an existing world — a game, a film, a show, a book — and that was made with AI tooling somewhere in its production.

What does not belong: re-uploads of someone else's footage, lightly filtered clips, and montages assembled from other people's work. The test is whether you added something.

Do I need an account to watch?

No. Browsing, searching and watching are all open. An account is needed to publish a film, endorse or comment, follow a creator, or save anything to a collection.

Is it free?

Yes, and there is no paid tier. The site is funded by platform-wide advertising only — no subscriptions, no per-film payments, and no way to pay for placement in a feed or the spotlight. The About page explains why that constraint matters for fan work.

How do I sign in?

With an email address and a password. Google and Discord sign-in are not available yet — the Discord and other links you see on profiles are just links a creator chose to share, not sign-in options.

Publishing a film

Where is my film actually hosted?

Wherever you already uploaded it. We do not host video: you submit a link and we embed the player. Supported sources are YouTube, Vimeo and X.

Only the video's ID is stored, and the player is rebuilt from that, so a link from anywhere else is rejected rather than embedded.

How does autofill for video data work?

In the publish form, paste your video URL first. With Autofill the title, description, runtime and tags from the video left on, the form fetches those fields from the source when the URL field loses focus.

You can edit anything it fills before you submit, and you can turn the autofill checkbox off if you prefer to type everything manually.

My YouTube video is not showing on my film page.

This is almost always a setting on the video itself rather than a problem here. Two things have to be true for the player to embed:

  • Its Visibility is set to Public (an Unlisted or Private video cannot be embedded for viewers).
  • Allow embedding is turned on — this is typically found under More options in the video's settings.

Fix either of those on the host, then reload your film page. Nothing needs to be re-submitted here.

What do I have to confirm when I submit?

That the work is your own, or genuinely transformative fan use, and that you have not used a real person's voice or likeness without their permission. Submission is blocked until you tick it. This is the one box that is worth reading properly — see the Creator Guidelines.

How many categories and tools can I tag?

Up to 2 categories, 3 genres and 8 AI tools per film. The caps exist because tags drive discovery, and a film tagged with everything is findable by nothing.

If a tool you used is not listed, mention it in your description and raise it on the suggestion board so it can be added properly.

Can I edit or remove a film after publishing?

Yes. Open your film and use the Edit button on its page, or the ⋯ menu on your own cards. Everything is editable, including the video link and the workflow panel.

Renaming a film does not change its web address, so links people have already shared keep working.

Should I fill in the Prompt & Workflow panel?

It is optional, and it is also the single most-read part of a film page for other creators. Prompts, the audio pipeline, and render settings are what turn a film into something others can learn from — a large part of why people come here at all.

How long can a film be?

Up to 12 hours of runtime, which in practice is no limit. Runtime is metadata for the duration badge; the file itself lives with your video host, under their rules.

Watching and saving

What are collections?

Your own playlists. Every account starts with Watch Later and Favorites, and you can create as many named collections as you like — by universe, by tool, by anything.

Use Save on a film page or the ⋯ menu on a card. Everything you have saved lives in My Cinematic Vault, where it can be sorted and filtered.

What does endorsing a film do?

It is the site's single positive signal: one endorsement per member per film, and it feeds the trending feeds. There is no downvote.

How does mature content work?

Creators mark their own films. You control what you see of anything marked mature under Settings → Preferences → Mature content:

  • Blur — thumbnails are covered until you click to reveal them.
  • Hide — marked films are left out of feeds and search entirely.

Neither setting is an age check. If something is marked wrongly, report it from the film page.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for search?

Press / anywhere outside a text field to jump to the search bar. Suggestions appear as you type; arrow keys move through them and Escape closes the list.

Your account

How do I change my avatar or banner?

Under Settings → Profile. Either paste an image URL or upload a file — PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP, up to 512 KB for an avatar and 2 MB for a banner.

Uploads are stored by the site, so they keep working even if the place you originally got the image from goes away.

I forgot my password.

Use Forgot password and follow the emailed link. Resetting also clears a lockout, so if too many failed attempts locked you out, a reset gets you back in.

Can I sign out of other devices?

Yes. Changing your password under Settings → Security ends every other session while keeping the one you are using.

Can I delete my account?

Yes, under Settings → Security → Delete account. You will be asked for your password and to type delete @yourhandle, because it happens immediately and cannot be undone. There is no grace period and no way for us to restore it afterwards.

What exactly happens when I delete my account?

Removed straight away:

  • Your profile — display name, bio, country, links, avatar and banner.
  • Your email address and username, both released. You can register again with the same email later.
  • Every film you published, together with any drafts, and their comments and endorsements.
  • Your collections, notifications, endorsements, and follows in both directions.

Kept, but no longer yours: comments, forum posts and suggestions you wrote stay on the site, shown as Deleted Member with no link back to you.

They are kept because other members replied to them. Removing your comment would take its replies with it, and removing a thread you started would delete every answer in it — other people's writing, deleted because you left. If a specific post of yours needs to go, delete it before closing the account.

Will people still see my name on old posts after I delete my account?

No. Your handle and display name are replaced everywhere by Deleted Member, and nothing links back to a profile. Nobody can register your old handle in a way that inherits those posts either — the anonymous handles are reserved.

Rights and moderation

I am a rights holder and I want something removed.

Use the DMCA page. It takes a takedown notice without an account, and valid notices are acted on. Fan work here exists on the tolerance of rights holders, not by right, and we treat it that way.

Someone re-uploaded my work. What now?

Report the film from its page, and file a notice on the DMCA page if you hold the rights. Using another creator's work as raw material without credit and permission is against the Creator Guidelines regardless of the copyright position.

My film was removed. Why, and can I appeal?

You will be told the reason. If the removal followed a copyright notice you can file a counter-notice; the DMCA page sets out how that works.

What is never allowed?
  • Sexual content involving minors, and sexualisation of real people without consent.
  • Cloned voices or likenesses of real people without permission.
  • Synthetic footage presented as a real event or a real statement.
  • Harassment, threats, or incitement against a person or group.

Still stuck?

Post on the suggestion board for anything about the site itself, or use the DMCA page if you are a rights holder.
